MINI JCW GP Coupe Put on Hold

As strange as it may sound, it appears that MINI has cancelled its JCW GP Coupe model before it ever hit the streets and in the hands of buyers.

In a surprising move, the British automaker is having second thoughts about the JCW GP two-door model with the belief that it would make the R56 GP (above) less special. With the Coupe the new performance flagship for the brand, a GP model would likely outshine the hard-top R56 GP version, which currently sits as the fastest MINI ever built with an impressive 8:19 Nurburgring lap time.

That said, MINI’s hesitation makes sense. However, it also raises questions as to how serious the brand is about making the Coupe the true halo model.

According to company sources, MINI may not have cancelled the project entirely but has put an indefinite hold on plans to further develop and release the car.

Perhaps just buying time until the hatchback model is all sold out, the MINI JCW GP Coupe has already been spied testing (below) and so it’s likely we’ll see it in dealers, though not any time soon.
